From 29 June to 2 July 2026, more than 10 COREu partner organisations gathered in Chania, Greece, for ICONHIC - International Conference on Natural Hazards and Infrastructure, to exchange knowledge and discuss the future of carbon capture and storage (CCS).

A key highlight was the COREu-curated session, ''Resilient CO₂ Capture, Transport and Storage (CCS) Infrastructure Across Europe: Risk, Monitoring, Systemic Resilience, Policy'', held on 30 June. During the session, COREu partners covered a broad range of topics, from carbon credits and market mechanisms to monitoring technologies, risk assessment, socio-economic assessment, and capacity-building. The session reflected COREu's holistic approach to enabling safe, resilient, and socially responsible CCS deployment across Europe.

The session concluded with a lively discussion on the importance of moving beyond monitoring towards timely decision-making in the event of accidents such as CO₂ leakage. It highlighted the need for robust governance and clear response procedures to ensure the safe operation of CCS.

We were also pleased to see a strong representation of women among the speakers. Their expertise highlighted the important role women play in advancing CCS and helping shape a more sustainable future.
