On 17 September 2026, the COREu and HERCCULES project joined forces in Kavala, Greece, for the dissemination event "Development of the CCUS Chain in Greece", hosted by the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES) with the support of Energean, EU CORE Consulting, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum, and LEAP s.c.a r.l.. The event brought together over 70 participants, including scientists, industry leaders, policymakers, and local stakeholders to discuss the role of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) in supporting industrial decarbonisation and the transition to a low-carbon economy in Greece and across Europe.


📍 Kavala is home to Prinos CO₂, the first carbon storage project in Southeast Europe and one of the most advanced projects of its kind in the EU. Both COREu and HERCCULES work closely with Energean, the operator of the Prinos CO₂ project, to contribute to the development of the CCUS value chain in Greece. During the event, our project partner Stavros Niotis from Prime Marine presented COREu and its role in supporting the development of a European CO₂ transport and storage network, including routes connected to projects such as Prinos CO₂.

Throughout the day, participants discussed the key building blocks of a future CCUS value chain in Greece, including regulation, industrial decarbonisation, CO₂ transport, and geological storage. The event highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in turning CCUS ambitions into reality. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Prinos CO₂ site and gain first-hand insight into a project that is expected to play a key role in the low-carbon transition in Southeast Europe.
