Talking Carbon: COREu launches a podcast series

Talking Carbon: Discover COREu through our podcast series

COREu is launching Talking Carbon, a new podcast series taking listeners behind the work of the project and exploring how COREu is contributing to the development of an interconnected carbon capture and storage (CCS) network across Europe.

Throughout the series, we will introduce the wider context of CCS, discuss its development across Europe and take a closer look at the work being carried out within COREu. A particular focus will be on COREu’s four CO₂ routes. In the upcoming episodes, listeners will hear more about the different regions involved, the development of the routes and the work being carried out to connect CO₂ sources with transport and storage infrastructure.

Talking Carbon: Discover COREu through our podcast series

Listen to Episode 1: Why Are We Putting CO₂ Underground?

In our first episode, we look at CCS as an entire value chain. Captured CO₂ needs to be prepared to meet specific requirements, transported, and ultimately injected into suitable geological formations for permanent storage. CCS can be particularly important for hard-to-abate industries, where some emissions cannot easily be eliminated through electrification, renewable energy or other measures. The message is not CCS instead of other decarbonisation solutions, but CCS alongside them as part of a broader decarbonisation portfolio.

But deploying CCS at scale also raises another question: does every emitter need its own CO₂ transport and storage chain?

Shared infrastructure offers a different approach. By connecting multiple CO₂ sources to common pipelines, shipping routes, hubs and storage sites, individual CCS projects can develop into interconnected CO₂ networks. This is particularly relevant in Europe, where CO₂ may need to move across regions and national borders to reach suitable storage. This is where COREu comes in. We are working to support the development of an integrated European CO₂ transport and storage system, connecting CO₂ sources with suitable storage and developing regional CO₂ routes that can ultimately form part of a wider European network.

Our first guest, Francesco Finotti from SINTEF Energy Research, Project Coordinator of COREu, takes us through these topics and introduces how COREu is working to develop CO₂ routes across Europe.

The podcast is hosted by Jon Larrachea from GERG - European Gas Research Group.
